Critically Acclaimed #43: 'The Flintstones' and 'Streets of Fire'

"The Flintstones" was a hit animated series about cave people whose lives eerily resembled the classic sitcom "The Honeymooners," and decades after it left the air, it became a blockbuster live-action movie starring John Goodman, Ric Moranis, Elizabeth Perkins, Rosie O'Donnell, Kyle MacLachlan, Halle Berry and Elizabeth Taylor. And it's awful. Just awful.

So why is the live-action version of "The Flintstones" the perfect double feature with Walter Hill's cult classic 1950s-themed rock and roll action thriller "Streets of Fire?" You'll just have to listen to this week's episode of Critically Acclaimed to find out!

Plus, new reviews of "Kin," "Let the Corpses Tan," "The Little Stranger," "Operation Finale" and "Searching," and more of your letters!

  1. So, I sent a letter about this one, and in it I said I would deal with song meanings in a post here.

For the record, when I shared your discussion about these two songs with my wife, you earned a hearty, "OH MY GOD! What are they, ten?!?"

    So, with that -

What is “Tonight is what it means to be young” about?

Well, not to put too fine a point on it, it’s about hooking up.

We’re presented in the first five stanzas with four fantasy males – the glistening beach boy, nature boy by a lake, a prince in his castle, and the boy on the star. She knows that she’s not going to find one of these fantasy males, but a boy – any boy – is the next best thing.

She has a dream that even with a boy, they’ll be lying in the light of newfound love in morning. But she doesn’t really think that’s going to happen. Happiness is a dream, and tonight is real. It’s going to be over in the morning. This is a one-night thing. Before you know it, it’s gone.

So dance away, find a boy, and pray for the magic to come (e.g., that the sex is good).

Cause that’s what being young is about.

Now, compare that with “Objects in the Rearview Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are.” First of all, this is clever because the actual statement on cars is the opposite, “Objects in the Rearview Mirror are Closer Than They Appear”. This song is all about how past emotional events can suddenly, unexpectedly pull us back.

The point is that they may appear immediate, real, and visceral, but they’re in the past. They’re behind you. In your rearview mirror

The song tells three stories – of a dead best friend, of an abusive father, and of a first love. Each story is punctuated by the emotional realization of the past coming back.

In order, “There are times I think I see him peeling out of the dark. I think he’s right behind me now and he’s gaining ground.”

“I'll hear that ugly coarse and violent voice, and then he grabs me from behind and then he pulls me back!”

“But I can see her rising up out of the back seat now just like an angel rising up from a tomb!”

This is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. It is lyrically complex with some of the most visceral phrasing I’ve encountered, such, “He was dangerous and drunk and defeated and corroded by failure and envy and hate.”

Musically, they do a cool thing where they chorus sings chords. And the part of the chorus singing the high note changes to make it augmented and then diminished.

At the end of the day, Steinman is simply a genius.

  3. You may choose a wooden or carbon paddle, but if this is your first time, it is advised that you buy one that is 6 inches higher than you. If you persevere, you'll soon be an accomplished paddle board surfer who uses carbon paddles, so keep practicing! North Tahoe boat rentals
